Challenge #13 - Shades of Red and Green

In the holiday spirit - this week's category was Shades of Red and Green. Here are the photos I decided on - it was a candle-holder on the table at my dad's house this past weekend.

It's not really an impressive shot, I know, but I like the idea of it - so that'll be my entry for this week. I'm hoping it's the 'shot that counts'.

Challenge #11 - Hidden Text

The initial photo was taken just prior to my final photo class this week. I got one of the girls from my class to (reluctantly) pose for it. Her facial expression is pretty darn good.

The first step was a crop to make the photo square, and a little touching up here and there. The binary code was redone, since I didn't have a lot of time to shoot and it was out of focus in the original. To do this, I had to mask the original with a separate layer and then add the new test over top of the mask.
The second step was to convert the photo to B&W (appropriate, since my class was all in B&W). However, part of what we learnt was not to just accept a print that was converted from colour to black and white, since a good B&W print is more than just removing the colour....

So to get from the print above to the final product, I burned in the darker areas to give it a little more depth. I thought about dodging on her face, but it never looked right.
